NKBA STUDENT COMPETITION: 
COASTAL PARADISE KITCHEN

This kitchen is inspired by Cannon Beach's rocky western coast. This design creates a timeless space with durable equipment and fixtures. It is a moody and modern take on a traditional coastal home. The emphasis is connecting the space to nature. The materials used are natural elements such as wood and natural stone. It features deep earthy colors that are inspired by the cliffs, sand, and ocean. This inspiration for the color palette is the countertop that mixes various shades of blues, greens, grays and browns. The cabinet color incorporates a deep blue. Natural rift white oak is used for the cabinetry on each side of the range to incorporate warmth. The backsplash selected is fish scale tile inspired by the aquatic ocean life. It also has a dark stained beam to add architectural character as well as light bleached wood floors. The large window allows the room to have lots of natural light and a spectacular view outside, which helps to feel more connected to nature.

Per the clients' needs, the kitchen requires functionality to serve as a space for them to host their family and friends. This space is the heart of the home, so it has a peninsula to offer seating and encourage the family to gather and socialize. It also allows the couple to have an extra place to work. The cabinet near the peninsula has a charging station to allow them to have a dedicated place to charge their devices.

Fisher & Paykel appliances were used in the space making them an excellent choice for their performance and reliability. The 36" professional range was selected for them to have the ability to cook meals for themselves and all of their guests. The ventilation is from their classic line and adds interest to the space. The dishwasher and refrigerator are integrated to have a seamless blend with the cabinetry.

Overall, drawing inspiration from the rocky coast creates a modern coastal home that is warm, inviting, and can stand the test of time. With the materials, finishes and appliances, the couple can enjoy this kitchen with their friends and family for years to come.
